The famous saying goes, “A dog is a man’s best friend.” Now, this saying should be more than enough to give us some sort of understanding why a lot of people prefer to have dogs as pets.

But with the many dog types all over the world, it would certainly be a bit difficult choosing the right one for you. Plus, you have to put into context which of these dog types would be appropriate for your family and your lifestyle as well. And there’s also the matter of proper dog living, building or buying the right dog house, purchasing dog beds, dog supplies, and dog toys. Not to mention finding the right name out of the wide variety of dog names you and your family can come up with! Oh, yes, the list goes on and on and on!

The one thing you’d probably want to do first is to choose which of the many dog types you’d want to have as a pet. This is actually the fun part, you know. You get to explore the different breeds of dogs and know them a bit, to check if they match your preferences.

But no matter what breed of dog you’d get, whether you would want a hunting dog, a boxer dog, a bull dog, a prairie dog, a mountain dog, or a watch dog, there are more important things to consider as well. Here are just some of the things that you should consider when getting a dog for a pet. First, you should remember that dogs are very playful animals. Thus, the activity level of the dog you’re going to get should be considered. Determine if your dog kennel has enough space for your pet to move about, depending on his or her activity level. If the breed you are thinking of getting is hyperactive, then you just might have to consider the amount of outdoor space you have.

You should also consider the temperament of the breed you want to get. There are certain breeds of dogs that are more temperamental than others. If you want a dog for your children, then you should get one of those less temperamental ones. This way, you won’t have to worry that much about the dog getting too playful with your children. For when there are children concerned, it’s really not advisable to get a breed that is known to be aggressive. Also, when it comes to the temperament of the breed, you might also want to consider the possibility of dog training. Aggressive breeds can present a lot of dog problems related to hostility. And when there are dogs fighting, especially aggressive dogs, this can lead to a lot of problems. So, it is indeed quite beneficial to consider the possibility of dog training here.

Longevity is also a main concern dog owners should consider. Generally, larger breeds have a shorter lifespan than the smaller breeds. There are also some larger breeds that don’t really reach a lifespan of ten years. There are also certain toy breeds that can live up to twenty years. Such a matter should indeed be taken into account when you are thinking of buying a certain breed of dog.

And of course, there’s the cost and upkeep of having a pet. From dog clothes to dog shoes, it’s really up to you how you would want to spoil the dog you’re going to get. And don’t forget the more important matter of vaccination, veterinarian bills, flea prevention costs and the like.

No matter what breed you’re going to get, you also have to ask yourself if you are indeed ready to get a dog. Because even if you have the budget for dog training, dog supplies, and such, you would also have to have a sense of responsibility over your pet. And this, by far, is the most important thing to consider.
