Dog Names

There is a whole world going on in dog names. You might not think much about it, choosing whatever dogs names that come to mind just to get it over with. But remember that the names for dogs that you eventually choose will stay with your pet for the rest of his or her life.

So…. You think you can handle the responsibility?

Is Your Dog A She Or A He?
This might seem like an unimportant question right now, but believe it or not it makes things so much simpler for you. Otherwise, you might end up choosing Dex or any other cool dog names only to find out that your dog’s gender does not even remotely conform to that kind of name.

Moreover, knowing your dog’s gender beforehand can help narrow down your search for the right dog names. So instead of considering both male and female dog names, you can just scratch out the cute names for girl dogs from the list and focus on those that fit your dog’s gender.

Choose A Name That Fits Your Dog’s Personality
Well, this is self-explanatory. But people sometimes get…creative with their dogs names. So even though your dog is the gentlest, cutest, quietest little mutt in the world, you have decided to name it “Fang” anyway because you thought it would be cool. And it is, in fact, cool-sounding. But the problem is that other people might judge your dog simply by its name.

Another situation you want to avoid is when you are at a park and you are calling your dog: “Death Breath! Here, boy!”

That’s an embarrassing situation right there. Funny but probably not something you want to experience personally. So choose an appropriate name. You can never go wrong with conventional names that nevertheless reflects your dog’s personality.

Be consistent.

After deciding on a name for your dog, stick with it. Don’t confuse your dog any more than you have to.

Naming your dog is actually part of dog training. When you call the name, your dog should be able to respond. Use treats if you have to. Praises will also work fine. Just remember that some breeds like lavish praises more than others. They seem to thrive on it.

Now, if you keep changing your dog’s names, nothing is going to happen. Your dog will never learn to associate the word and respond to it, no matter how many lavish praises you lay down on him or how many treats you offer.

Be Careful Of Similar-Sounding Words
Consistency with the name may also be related to how the name sounds. Be sure not to choose a name that sounds too close to command words like “Sit” or “Down.” For instance, Joe can sound very close to “No.” When your pet hears the word, he may get confused as to what you are referring to. Are you commanding him not to do something? Or are you simply calling out his name? This could lead to a situation where your dog won’t respond to your call because he is too confused.

Use Names That Are Easy To Pick Up
Giving your dog a unique name is good. However, just make certain that the name is easy for your dog to pick up on. If you give him a complicated name, he may not be able to remember it and respond to your call. Usually, a two-syllable name is advisable as they are easy enough to understand and recognize. Examples of good names to give your dog are Buster, Spencer, Dexter, etc. You can also try for single-syllable words, but take note of the preceding rule.
